What is SEO? (Search Engine Optimization)


What is SEO?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the web design martial art of making your site rank better on popular search platforms like Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Duck Duck Go.  The higher the search engine rank the higher your site shows on the search results page.   The higher you are on the page the greater the business opportunity!   Over the next few posts were going to go over in more detail the main four things you can do to help your site move up on the search results and some free tools that will help.    Those four things are:

1)  Your site content needs to have popular keywords for your topic.

When you do a search in your favorite search engine, you're asking that search engine to find sites that relate to the words in the search bar.   There are some keywords are more heavily searched then others.   There's also some keywords that have more people desperately trying to get to that top spot.   Google has a tool that can help identify keywords, their popularity, and the level competition associated.

2)  Your site needs to have people looking at it. (Traffic)

This one is both simple and hard.   Having keywords is good to help tell Search Engines what's on your page, but you also need people to look at your site.   If your site begins to rank higher in search this will get easier.   Social media, guest blog posts, business cards, or even cold emails to potential opportunities can help drive people to view your site.   Site Analytics from either your site provider if your using SquareSpace, Shopify, or Wordpress.

3) How many other web sites link to your site.  (Links)

Search engines also look for other sites that link to yours.  The more sites (including social media) that link back to your site the better.   Essentially that means that your spreading the word, or other webmasters like your content enough to share it with their audience.

4) How often your site is updated with new content. (Blog)

Search engines are also tracking when your website changes.   If a web site regularly has more content, or undergoes a page change the higher that site will show on the results page.   A site that is updated regularly is likely to be more current and relevant to the term searched.
